Vern was able to sort out a quality road bike for me at very short notice. Nothing was a problem and Vern is an excellent communicator. I’ll be hiring from Vern whenever I’m back in this part of Yorkshire.
Vern sorted us out with some great bikes for the Way of the Roses route. We're based in Leeds and were able to pick them up in Harrogate. Vern is extremely friendly, flexible, and knowledgeable. Will be renting from him again in the future. 2 thumbs up, thanks again Vern.
We had a great experience with Vern. He was very kind and friendly. He accommodated our request for five gravel bikes at short notice and was very flexible and relaxed about pick up and drop off times. Communication and booking was incredibly prompt and straightforward. The bikes themselves were high quality and well maintained and enabled us to enjoy a tremendous day out taking in some gorgeous lanes and vistas as well as few challenging hills to feel smug about after - it was a highlight of our holiday!
Outstanding service. We had really easy and prompt communication with Vern, who was able to accommodate our big group without issue. It was straightforward to arrange drop off and pick up of bikes at our accommodation, and Vern was flexible when plans changed last minute. We hired three EBikes from Vern for our cycling trip round some of the Yorkshire dales. Vern was extremely helpful in ensuring we handled the bikes in the correct manner.
Bikes were in a well maintained condition and we certainly felt safe with the disc brakes for coming down some steep declines.

We hired two Marin DSX bicycles from Vern to do a 5-day cycling tour in, around, up, and down the Dales, and will highly recommend VOC! Vern was very responsive in answering our pre-trip questions. He was flexible and accommodating in providing us with equipment that we could not bring overseas (helmets, lock, pump, multi-tool, puncture kit, and pedal spanner), and in meeting us at the start and end points of our tour. The bikes themselves were in great condition: almost new, and well maintained. They were a pleasure to ride, and we had no mechanical issues with them at all. Their disc brakes were a must for the steep Dales, especially in the rain.
All perfect. I hired a trek Emonda for a week and it arrived in perfect condition and well maintained. Vern offers perfect service also with the e-bikes for my family.

I booked a full bike service for my very neglected bike. From the start Vern's communication was excellent, and he came to my house to personally collect the bike. He communicated throughout the service with what the bike needed, to check I was happy to proceed, and completed the service ahead of schedule. He delivered it back looking like new!
When the bike needed a tweak after a few weeks, he was very quick to come and sort it.

Can’t fault Vern and his service. Myself and 5 friends were visiting Harrogate for the weekend. I contacted Vern about hiring bike. He got back to me really quickly answering all of my queries. He delivered our bikes to us at the accommodation.. super condition bikes.. they looked new. All had safety helmet and came with puncture repair kits. We were supplied with a possible route, bike locks and a pump. After a lovely day cycling in the rare sunshine we called Vern Knaresborough for a pick up in approx 40mins and we couldn’t have timed it better. Having injured my back I needed my Giant Road bike converting to a flat bar. Vern did an amazing job and wherever possible used stock (2nd hand) parts to keep the cost down. 5 star service from a 5 star fella!

My wife and I rented two bikes for a week and it couldn’t have been any better. The bikes where in excellent condition, almost new, well adjusted and ready to go. We had no mechanical issues during any of our rides (which added to more than 600Km). Vern was very kind since the very beginning in every way possible: he agreed to meet at the time we needed to collect the bikes (and we were late :-( ), he lended us some stuff we hadn’t brought from Mexico, and even gave us two new water bottles as a gift! He is a very experienced rider himself and gave us a lot of advice regarding riding on and off the roads in UK and even suggested some areas to visit in the park. We are very happy with the service and highly recommend this very professional company. Also, we highly recommend visiting the Yorkshire Dales on bike, just make sure you plan ahead your rides and chose a geographically adequate place as your base (we decided on Ilkley which is a very charming town and close to many cycle circuits and hiking routes).

I had a tremendous day’s riding (90km) around Harrogate on a bike from Vern. Road bike was perfect and Vern helped out with a lift to the Wellington Inn for a post-ride beer.
I contacted Vern to do a full service on two of my bikes, Both specialized, an ageing Rockhopper mountain bike and a sirrus hybrid used for commuting, both were both showing a bit of age mechanically! Vern was very friendly and professional when arranging the service and for a small fee agreed to pick up the bikes, There was no hurry I pointed out as I used another bike in the meantime but both were done after a few days, Vern did a written report of any issues found and any work carried out as well as brake pad wear which was really useful. Vern dropped the bikes off and I took them both for a little test ride. Well it was like riding brand new bikes (war scars still there) they were so clean and everything felt just right, nice and tight, gear change smooth. Cant thank Vern enough and will do my best to recommend him to friends and family.

Awesome service! I rented a gravel bike for the day, good quality bike and Vern couldn’t have been more accommodating. Excellent location to start a tour from, many quiet country roads to enjoy.
I needed an e-bike for a long week-end and Vern very efficiently replied to my messages and then delivered a good ebike in perfect condition to the hotel, even before I arrived, and also picked it up after. Very good service. Of course I had to pay for the delivery, but that's normal.

Can't say enough the positive experience dealing with Vern. I contacted numerous bike rental agencies in the area looking for a small 47cm carbon road bike to no avail. Vern didn't have one either but he actually purchased a 47cm frame and built it for me. Unbelievable, what service! ! He also provided us some routes and was very responsive when we had an issue. The riding is amazing and challenging in the Dales with lots of punchy 18-25% climbs. Highly, highly recommend Vern Overton Cycling!
Found Vern online and organised a bike hire from overseas. It was easily organised and once on holiday collected the bike with no issues. The bike was low spec but in good condition and well maintained. Vern was helpful and knowledgeable and I strongly recommend his services.

We contacted Vern Saturday to rent bikes Sunday. He was very responsive and helpful, even brought the bikes to the train station for us. Three of us used road bikes and one used an e-bike, he helped size us and provided locks and helmets. Knowing we wanted to ride from Harrogate to Fountains Abbey, he mapped out a good route and showed us where to start. We could not have asked for better bikes or better service, it made our day so perfect. Highly recommend exploring this gorgeous area on 2 wheels and having VOC set you up and equip you. I'm a keen cyclist and Vern set me up with a lovely late model Trek road bike. I went for long rides in the Dales every day for two weeks and never got tired of riding in this beautiful part of the world. There are so many quiet lanes and roads, and you have a choice of terrain from flat to Tour-level climbs. Lots of other cyclists about and plenty of places to stop if you wish. If you love cycling, come and try Yorkshire. I couldn't have asked for more.

Had a great 5 days of cycling around the Yorkshire Dales on one of Vern's hired road bikes. Some of the best cycling I've done in the UK with endless quality roads and some great hill climbing and descents. The Trek I hired didn't skip a beat and was ideal. Light and well maintained with a good gear set-up for some of the steeper gradients. Would thoroughly recommend as it really is a great value service that's relaxed and accommodating, I doubt if you could get better, thanks Vern!

We used Vern’s bike hire in October 2020 (sorry for such a belated review, Vern!) and the service was fantastic. Flexible pickup/drop-off times, great price and invaluable route advice. He even came into Harrogate to help us work the gears after we’d picked up the bikes and headed off!
I’m in Harrogate for the World Championships Cycling. My plan was to ride the Yorkshire Dales myself, as well as the Harrogate Circuit. When my frontwheel broke during a ride a few days earlier, I thought that was it.
I began looking to hire a roadbike in Harrogate and ended up at Verns site. He answered very quickly that he was all out of roadbikes but he was enthusiastic to lend me one of his spare front wheels! After some quick and clear communication we met in the center of Harrogate, where he just gave me his wheel. He didn’t want any money or something in return. He trusted me, a complete stranger, to return his wheel two days later.
Thanks to Vern I did my ride today: 126km including 2x the Harrogate Circuit.
This review is way overdue - but i want to say that Vern went out of his way (literally) to deliver the bike to me at Harogate Station and pick i up after my week of cycling. The bikes were in top condition, reasonably priced, and Vern helped us out with route planning too. Highly recommend.

He not only delivers the bikes to your door and picks them up, he offers great advice on what type of bike, where to go and what to do. Thanks to Vern, I had a fantastic cycling holiday exploring the beautiful Yorkshire countryside for over a week without the effort, stress and carbon emissions of bringing my own bike to the UK. He set me up with a lovely road bike and couldn't have been more helpful. Communications were always prompt and friendly. There is so much cycling to be enjoyed in this area whether you stay local or venture far out into the Dales. Thoroughly recommended.
Vern and his wife were incredibly helpful all weekend, dropping the bikes off at our accommodation, and even poping back to help us with the right tools to get our bikes set up perfectly.
The bikes themselves were fantastic, we highly recommend electric bikes for exploring the dales, as they allowed us to see so much of the countryside without exhausting us by the end of the day! The batteries lasted really well and Vern supplied chargers so they could be ready to go every morning.
If we're ever back in the neighbourhood we will definitely be booking bikes with Vern again!
My girlfriend and I hired two hardtail mountain bikes from Vern, to explore Nidderdale. Vern was fantastic - flexible with pick up and drop off, provided us with a map and was really friendly. We rode out from the pick up point and past Gouthwaite reservoir and Scar House Reservoir. The bikes dealt with terrain effortlessly and we had a lovely day out, despite rain and wind. I would recommend getting the bikes dropped at a starting point, so as to minimize the time spent on roads. Cheers, Dave

This review is long overdue! My wife and I visited Yorkshire this past July. I was fortunate enough to have a friend take me on a beautiful yet sometimes grueling 104 mile ride through the Dales. I was also fortunate in my choice of Vern Overton Cycling for my bike rental. Their bikes and service are top notch! I met Mr. Overton twice once on delivery and then on pick-up...great guy! I highly recommend this shop!

Me and my partner hired 2 electric bikes to go out and explore the area for my birthday and pedal over to Brimham Rocks. Vern was very friendly and there was no hassle, we signed the forms, got shown how to use the bikes and off we went.

I contacted Vern from the United States and he responded immediately with road bike availability. Given measurements from our bikes at home, he set the hired bikes up perfectly! Should you need a helmet or a lock, just ask and Vern may be able to accommodate you. Each bike worked well and was fully kitted with pump and spare tube. If you are from an area with less hilly terrain or are not an especially strong climber, let Vern know and I am sure he will dial in your bike accordingly. He installed our pedals and provided excellent advice for a route into Harrogate as well as an amazing ride into the Yorkshire Dales. We rode about 18 hours that week with long, steady rides, shorter hard rides and race watching with some inclement weather and had no issues with the bikes. There is no better way to see that amazing part of the UK than by bike. Vern is an encyclopedia of riding knowledge in and with his expertise setting up bikes, I cannot imagine that one could do better hiring bikes in that area of Yorkshire.

We rented two e-bikes from Vern for a circular route of about 45 miles. It was a glorious ride! The bikes were perfect for the up and down of this countryside. Vern got us all geared up and was available by phone for when we returned. A perfect day on excellent bikes!!

Booked to ride a sportive in Thirsk, N. York’s but was without a bike after an accident & left with little prospect of hiring a road bike to be able to take part. Then we found Vern on a web search. Spoke to him briefly over the phone and then completed everything by e mail and txt. Nothing was too much trouble for Vern who delivered the bike to me, fitted my pedals and all was good to go. Completed my sportive the following day and the bike was great to ride. I phoned Vern to see if I could change the day of return for the bike which was no trouble at all and I received a refund which was unexpected. Vern contacted me after dropping off the bike to say I had left a piece of personal equipment on the bike and would post to me which I received the following day. Overall very impressive service from Vern who was a pleasure to talk to who provides an excellent service. We cycled the Way of the Roses with our adult children and some friends. We had been struggling to put together bike rental, bike transport and baggage forwarding, but after contacting Vern, found he could do it all and at a better price than separate providers. He was always prompt in his responses when we were planning and had lots of very useful suggestions. His equipment, which included carbon fiber Trek road bikes, helmets, locks and repair kits was all first rate. He met us as planned the first morning, right on time, and dropped our bags before our arrival at our hotels along the way. He adjusted the bikes to fit us, offered our choice of pedal type and even did a tune up along the way. It was clear that he really cared about our experience and about the service he offers and his knowledge of cycling comes from personal experience. I would very highly recommend Vern for anyone considering a trip like ours across the UK.

I needed a bike at the last minute and none of the local bike shops could help me out. I called Vern and he couldn't have been more accommodating. He was good enough to drop the bike at my mates house as i was at work. When it was time to leave the back Vern offered to collect the bike as he was coming into town. I hired a Trek road bike and it was brilliant. Id highly recommend Vern and wouldn't hesitate to use again.

wonderful experience with Vern, great bikes, super location to ride to Ripley Castle and then off road largely to Knaresborough on bike paths. better location to ride from than Harrogate!
We booked a cycling break in Harrogate. Vern provided the bikes which were excellent. He delivered the bikes to our hotel and collected them at the end. All arrangements made went like clockwork. A very good experience. Would highly recommend.
